recipe: clementine & honey fizz

Citrus fruit is basically our only solace for fresh fruit during these cold winter months.  Clementine and Mandarin oranges are the highlights though, leaning more toward the sweet side.  One of the great things about these tiny oranges (besides their amazing flavor) is the fact that you can use a lemon or lime hand juicer to extract their deliciousness, making them easier to juice than full-sized oranges.  Of course, if you’re making enough for a crowd, we would suggest using a juicer instead.  In a pinch, store-bought tangerine juice would work.

For this cocktail, we’ll juice one sweet/tart orange per drink.  Add a bit of honey-kissed whiskey for a kick and some soda water for bubbles.  Just a few dashes of bitters and a quick squeeze of lime to balance out the cocktail so it’s not too sweet, and this is a really lovely way to brighten up these cold, dark, end-of-winter days.
Clementine & Honey Fizz
Makes 1 drink

Juice from 1 Clementine or Mandarin orange
1.5 oz (1 shot) Honey Bourbon or Whiskey (such as Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey)
1.5 (1 shot) oz soda water
2 dashes of bitters, such as Angostura
for garnish: 1 slice of lime and/or 1 sprig of mint

Combine honey bourbon and clementine juice in a lowball.  Top with soda water and bitters.  Gently stir a few times with a cocktail stirrer.  Garnish with a slice of lime and/or a sprig of mint.
