10 Ways to be a Better You This Year

I personally love the start of a New Year. It's a fresh start and another chance to be your best self. And yes, January 1st really is just another day. But the truth is that any day is a good day to set attainable goals and work on yourself. I know resolutions get a bad rap, but there is something to actually planning to have a better year. So today we are talking about 10 ways to be a better 'you' this year and we have a free printable worksheet so you can work through the things you want for yourself.

    1. Plan to succeed and write it down. For the most part, goals aren't reached by chance. They are reached by planning. By figuring out what it takes to make them happen. And by writing it down to hold yourself accountable. Sometimes you have really big goals for yourself and they seem impossible to accomplish. We've created a worksheet to help you break those goals down into smaller ones that actually seem doable. You can get the goal sheets by subscribing to our email list above.

    2. Focus on your inward self, not just you outward self. This is something that can easily get lost in New Years resolutions. There is a lot of pressure to start doing something extreme to have the best body you've ever had or to make the most money you've ever made. And if these are things you want, you can definitely set goals to get you there. But you really have to work on your inside self to maintain your outside self. You can't work on giving yourself to others when you haven't worked on giving to yourself. Focus on things like making your mind healthy or learning more about your personality and how you can show love to others.

    3. Figure out your Enneagram number. And if you already know it, figure out how to move up to the levels of health. The enneagram is really popular right now and I see so many people talking about it on social media, so it can seem like a fad. But it is so much more than a talking point on social media. The enneagram helps you understand what drives you and what makes you afraid. You can also see what level of emotional health you are operating at. So you could be a personality Type 5 and operating at a level 6 (the lower the level the higher the emotional health. So level 1 is the best you can ever be). So understanding who you are and what makes you behave the way you do is key to being your best self and achieving your goals. Here is a book I've heard great things about that helps you understand yourself better. This is on my books to read in 2019 list.

    4. Keep your mind right. Once you understand your personality type, you can better know what types of mental exercises will be the most helpful to you. We could all benefit from meditation, positive affirmations, and reframing how you think about yourself. Also, this is where self-care comes in. We can't be our best without making sure we taking care of ourselves. Another good practice for the mind is to reframe the way you think of yourself. Stop thinking of what you and others think you should look like, inside and out. Celebrate who you are and can be. Another great way to reframe your mind is by using a gratitude journal. We love The 5 Minute Journal as a way to think about what you are grateful for and what you could improve on.

    5. Find accountability. There is no instant satisfaction in long-term goal setting, so it's always good to have someone to hold you accountable. Someone who can cheer you on when you are still working on reaching the goal and likes talking about why you are doing what you are doing. And be that person for someone else too. If you are cheering someone on with their goals, you'll want to be working on yours too.

    6. Figure out your trigger points. These are points in your life where chaos is sure to ensue. For Casey, this is when her room gets messy- to the point of (almost) no return. For me, it's when the house get messy and out of hand. These are both things we've been working on more the past few years because we both know that when these things happen, the rest of our live immediately join in the chaos and it's hard to get control of any part of it. Figure out what that is for you. If you have to make sure you make your bed everyday to keep life in order, make that a priority.

    7. Break bad habits. And I don't mean the obvious bad habits like eating too much candy or smoking. Although, definitely quit smoking and eating too much candy. What I mean is what bad behaviors are you doing that sabotage yourself and your goals. For me, if I don't get enough sleep, I'm setting myself up for failure. And I don't get enough sleep because I stay up too late watching TV and fall asleep on the couch. Then, I don't do my nightly routine, and I've messed a lot of things up. So really not getting enough sleep is much deeper than just that simple thing. I need to set a limit of how much tv I watch at night, and I need to give myself a cut off time that allows me to do my nightly routine and get to bed in enough time to get my required amount of sleep. Start looking at your day and pay attention to the things you do that start to spin things out of control. Figuring out your bad habits help you get to the root of your trigger points. I recommend reading The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg is a great read for understanding why we form the habits we have. I seriously loved this book!

    8. Learn to manage your time. Successful time management is unique to everyone. Some people like to plan out their day by the hour. Some people like to do tasks in blocks of time. Others can just write a to do list for the day, and can figure out how to get it all done without being super specific about timing. Those people most likely don't allow themselves to get distracted. You just need to experiment with different ways to manage your time, and figure out which ones allows you to be the most successful. Regardless of how you manage your time, one big thing that causes misuse of time is multi-tasking. You can't answer emails, write a blog post, and answer text messages all at the same time. Try your best to carve out time where you are focusing on one thing at a time. For me, I need to put my phone far away because it's so tempting to just hop on Instagram to see how a picture is doing or to answer an email that just came through. But that distracts me from the task I should be doing. I doubt there are many super successful people who don't have a time management system in place.

    9. Set boundaries. Boundaries are a key to success in just about everything. Maybe you need to set boundaries for yourself. Maybe you need to tell someone else that they only have access to you during a certain time. Or maybe if you work at home like we do, you tell yourself that you will not work outside of your office space or you wont work past 6. Boundaries will set you free. I highly recommend reading the book, Boundaries by Henry Cloud and John Townsend. I didn't think I had a boundaries issue until I read this book. We could benefit from setting boundaries.

    10. Make healthy choices. And make healthy choices for the sake of being healthy not to just have a hot bod. Being healthy is so much more than looking thin and being in shape. The type of food you eat and what you drink have a direct effect on your mental health. All of your hard work is for nothing if your body isn't healthy. Obviously many people get sick at no fault of their own, but we should do our best to control the controllable and treat our bodies well.
