the DIY: NAIL POLISH DISPLAY

Photobucket
We FINALLY made this shelf just for our nail polish. It was in a sad box thing all neglected and hard to get to. Upsetting. It took us a while to finally buy all the wood and then actually make the project but it is done! And now one of our walls will forever be known as the "Nail Polish Wall." And thank goodness there is still room for nail polish because you know we aren't going to stop buying it.

Photobucket
To make this exact You will need:
a piece of flat wood- ours is 2'x3'
two pieces of wood- 2.5"x.75"x3'
8 quarter round pieces- each 22.5" long
9 pieces of craft wood- 22.5" long
A drill will make hanging the shelf 713984 times easier
Screws
Gorilla Glue- Fast Drying is best

Photobucket
I put one piece of craft wood on the end of the large piece of wood and put a mark every four inches from there. Put the same marks on both sides of the large piece of wood.

Photobucket
Draw lines to connect the marks from both sides of the wood.

Photobucket
Take a wet cloth and dampen the surface where you will be putting the Gorilla Glue. In this case, dampen the 3' edge of the flat piece of wood and also dampen the shorter side of the 2.5"x.75" wood. Place the glue on one of the surfaces- a small amount will work because the glue grows a whoooooole lot.

Photobucket
Repeat the dampening and glueing process to each piece of quarter round. Place the edge of the quarter round right up against the lines you drew earlier.

Photobucket
I skipped one of the lines to be able to put larger things on that shelf. Things like nail polish remover. There will not be a piece of quarter round under the last shelf. You can see the Gorilla Glue already puffing out of places.

Photobucket
Glue each piece of craft wood on top of the quarter round pieces. They will sit on top of the quarter round and touch the flat piece of wood.

Photobucket
Spray paint that bad boy whatever color(s) you like. We had minimal amounts of many different colors so we just went crazy and used everything we had hence, the accidental rainbow effect. But, whatevs- it totally works in the craft/blog room.

Photobucket
Drill holes in the back of the shelf and screw it into the wall- preferably into a stud. We used a stud finder.

Photobucket
Fill it up with your nail polishes! And all of your almost empty Cutex nail polish removers. If you are feeling really crazy you can organize all the colors. I did this and let's just say I spent way more time organizing nail polish than I would ever care to again- CASEY YOU BETTER PUT THE COLORS BACK WHERE THEY CAME FROM.

No we do not NEED any more nail polish BUT, what colors would you suggest we get to add to the collection? (We are always up to buy new awesome nail polish colors.)

  2. Very cute! I love the paint job. As for nail colors, Meet me at the Star Ferry by OPI is my favorite shade right now. It's a shimmery purple, with hints of gold and red. Looks good on all sorts of skin tones.

As for the gorilla glue, I would skip that part and use Elmer's wood glue and then possibly two finishing nails. But then again my father builds furniture in his spare time so I grew up making dovetails and cutting angles.

    1. The Gorilla Glue dries fast- aka in 30 minutes. Nails/screws will break the craft wood that we were using. We didn't want some heavy duty shelf, just something really easy to make that would be sturdy enough for our nail polish! This works perfectly!

Thanks for the nail polish suggestion!

    2. Finishing nails are a small gauge nail, more like pins than anything else. They have flat small heads that can't be seen from the front of the work and are traditionally covered in a small bit of plaster before you paint the object. If the wood you were using craft wood it was likely balsa, which you can use nails on. I just have a hate for gorilla glue as it doesn't age well. (yellows, sometimes paint peels off of it with time)

  8. So fun! You made this look easy but I'm still fearful I'm not handy enough to make this. I have this light mauve polish color. It's so soft & pretty & fresh & summery.
