the DIY: MAGAZINE ENVELOPES

DSC_0044

Well I got this idea from our friend Nina. She was making these super cute envelopes out of scrapbook paper and I really wanted to make some! So I came home and made some! They are so so SO simple and add a personal touch to your envelopes.

You will need: An old magazine, scissors, an envelope, a glue stick and a Sharpie.

Tear out some magazine pages that you like.

Carefully pull the envelope apart. I failed at this miserably but was able to make it work.

Trace the envelope on a magazine page.

Cut the envelope shape out.

Turn the envelope over as well as the magazine cut-out. Place the magazine cut-out on top of the envelope and fold the envelope back together (with the magazine cut-out on the inside).

Unfold everything and separate the magazine cut-out from the envelope.

Glue the bottom flap down to the two side flaps.

And you've made your own envelope!

The great thing about making these envelopes our of magazine pages is that the envelopes have a character all of their own. And it'd be hard to make two of the same envelopes.

  8. This is a lovely idea :) Have you tried using it? I feel as if one magazine page may be too thin and would tear really easily!

    1. Maybe use only magazine covers for a sturdier envelope? Just a thought.

  10. Ah, you've brought back a fun memory... I used to write letters to my boyfriend, now husband, and put them in handmade envelopes. I would use a white stick-on label as a space for the name and address so the post office wouldn't freak out. :) Thanks for the tutorial!

  13. Wonderful! It was great to be reminded of this! My MOM (now 86) used to make magazine envelopes and send me letters at summer camp! Seems like the P.O. let them go through as long as the address areas were clear. It was so much fun to get these! And even as I write this I can think of so many different ways to use these clever envelopes! Thank you for posting this idea!

  32. This is SO clever. I'm just realizing this now: when I was younger, a) I used to make envelopes out of boring plain paper, b) I used to keep cutting from here and there to make a neat one - why didn't I think of deconstructing one and then following the lead? Haha!

  36. Thanks for the inspiration! I used scrapbook paper (I am in the middle of organizing and don't have access to my magazine pages anyway) but I'll be using my envelope templates on magazines too, soon! http://busyweekends.com/notes/2014/09/03/diy-envelopes/

  37. Funny story. Since I have a bunch of free time due to social distancing I decided to make some envelopes. It's been years so I thought I would google it to get a refresher and this was the first article I saw and what's funny is 1) I know both of you 2) I am the Nina that you reference in the article :)
